SEGREGATION AND WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES

Manila has gone a long way in becoming the center of commerce, business, and trade in the Philippines. Being the capital city of the Philippines, Manila is expected to be one of the most developed locations in the country. This is why we Filipinos have this impression that working in the metro will give us a decent job that can support us. While that statement is not entirely incorrect, there are still many drawbacks behind this promise. Let us carefully go through these problems that Manila is facing. This is not to just simply complain and be sour about it but this is to point out the areas that needed attention and what are the possible solutions can be done.

Traffic Congestion

Manila won’t be Manila without the very terrible traffic situation. The Aquino administration once said that the worsening traffic is just a sign of progress. This statement has gathered negative comments since it is clear that the heavy traffic is a symbol for stagnation which will make it a bit ironic. But on the on the other hand, it might be the president’s odd way of saying that more and more people can now afford a vehicle and gas—two things that are really expensive nowadays. But looking deeper into this issue, there are many things that can contribute to this phenomenal traffic jam like the lack of discipline of the commuters and motorist, the poor implementation of traffic rules, and the poor urban planning.

Waste Management

Every city has an issue on pollution and Manila is no different. If you will look around, the hazy air and the sidewalks can by themselves tell you the severity of the condition of Manila when it comes to waste management. The traffic congestion is also a great contributor to this issue. And tracing down to its roots, lack of discipline is the biggest factor. We can’t help but wonder if there are enough janitorial supplies in Manila to fix this issue. And the alarming part of poor waste management leads to health issues. And while we are at it, isn’t it odd that we’re importing 55 containers of household rubbish from Canada for landfill?

Flooding

For a city, it is surprising to see how high flood levels reach in Manila with just a little rain. And when a big one hits the city, things can get really ugly and chaotic and we have years of typhoon reference to prove that. Poor drainage system and waste management are the main reason of flooding in Manila. And because of the flood, roads become impassable for vehicles contributing to the already abysmal traffic system.

These are just some of the problems that Manila is facing and we are aware of these conditions. What we can do now is to start the movement in ourselves by becoming a concern and disciplined citizen. Let us be liable for our actions and see how we can contribute in making Manila a better place.
